Free Things to Do in London / Actividades gratuitas en Londres

Even though we splurged in some parts of the trip, we did try to take advantage of the free stuff London has to offer. And we didn’t even scratch the surface. There are countless museums we couldn’t visit and I hope to go next time. All these activities are wheelchair accessible and the museums have accessible toilets.

Aunque despilfarramos en algunas partes del viaje, también tratamos de aprovechar las actividades gratuitas que ofrece Londres. Y ni siquiera hicimos tanto. Existen innumerables museos que no pudimos visitar y espero ir la próxima vez. Todas estas actividades se pueden hacer en silla de ruedas y los museos tienen baños accesibles.

British Museum / Museo Británico

Our hotel was close to the British Museum, so it was our first activity in London. I think we arrive at 11 a. m. and we spent about three hours there. If you like history and museums in general, this is the best place to go. Being a translator, I particularly loved the Rosetta Stone. The mummies were very cool too!

El hotel estaba cerca del Museo Británico, entonces fue lo primero que hicimos en Londres. Creo que llegamos más o menos a las 11 a. m. y estuvimos unas tres horas ahí. Si les gusta la historia y los museos en general, este es el mejor lugar para visitar. Al ser traductora, me gustó muchísimo ver la piedra de Rosetta. ¡Las momias también estuvieron geniales!

Natural History Museum / Museo de Historia Natural

That very same day, we took the 10 Bus (if I remember correctly) to Hyde Park Corner Station, we grabbed a quick bite, and then went to the Natural History Museum which was right around the corner. I liked this museum, but I wasn’t my favorite. I enjoyed the dinosaurs, the earthquake simulator, and the amazing architecture.

Ese mismo día, tomamos el Bus 10 (si lo recuerdo bien) hasta Hyde Park Corner Station, comimos rápido y después entramos al Museo de Historia Natural que estaba a la vuelta. Me gustó, pero no fue mi favorito. Me encantaron los dinosaurios, el simulador de terremotos y la arquitectura impresionante.

Changing the Guard / Cambio de Guardia

We were supposed to go to this with a tour included in the Golden Tours hop-on-hop-off bus, but it was kind of a disaster, I don’t recommend them. So we went on our own to Buckingham Palace at roughly 11 a. m. and I was able to see some guards marching, but not the entire event because it was packed with tourists, obviously. The day was nice and the stroll through St. James’s Park was lovely.

La idea era hacer esto con el tour que incluía el bus hop-on-hop-off de Golden Tours, pero fue un desastre y no los recomiendo. Entonces, fuimos por nuestra cuenta hasta Buckingham Palace más o menos a las 11 a. m. y pude ver algunos guardias que marchaban, pero no todo el evento porque estaba lleno de turistas, obviamente. El día estaba lindo y el paseo por St. James’s Park fue precioso.

The National Gallery / Galería Nacional

The gallery is within walking distance of St. James’s Park. After having some amazing tea, we went to The National Gallery to see some Van Gogh. There is an accessible entrance on one side of the building and some security guard looked at me funny because I didn’t know I had to press a big square button to open the door. Sorry, sir, we don’t have these magical doors in Argentina! The building itself is amazing, and we saw so many great painters. I was sad we had limited time because you shouldn’t visit this gallery in a rush. Seeing a Van Gogh for the first time moved me deeply.

La galería queda a un paso de St. James’s Park. Después de tomar un té riquísimo, fuimos a la Galería Nacional para ver los Van Gogh. Hay una entrada accesible a un costado del edificio y un guardia de seguridad me miró raro porque yo no sabía que debía presionar un botón cuadrado y grande para abrir la puerta. ¡Perdón, señor, no tenemos estas puertas mágicas en Argentina! El edificio es increíble y vimos a un montón de pintores grandiosos. Me entristeció que tuviéramos poco tiempo porque no se debería visitar esta galería a las apuradas. Ver un Van Gogh por primera vez me conmovió mucho.

Free Jack the Ripper Tour / Tour gratis de Jack el Destripador

I’m cheating here because we did pay a bit to do this tour, but you name the price according to the experience you had. We were late the day we were supposed to do the tour with Strawberry Tours so we used that night to take cool pics of the Tower Bridge, and I had my first tube ride, it was fun! We took the tour the night after, in Spanish with Emma, and I encourage you to ask whether she’s available because she knows everything about Jack the Ripper and is a really fun guide. The tour is wheelchair accessible and the pace is really slow, so you don’t get tired. Emma was also offering a Harry Potter tour, and I’m definitely going to email her on my next trip.

Acá voy a hacer trampa porque gastamos un poco en este tour, pero ustedes ponen el precio según la experiencia que tuvieron. Llegamos tarde el día que íbamos a hacer el tour con Strawberry Tours, entonces usamos esa noche para sacar unas fotos geniales del Puente de la Torre, y viajé en subte por primera vez, ¡estuvo divertido! Hicimos el tour a la noche siguiente, en español con Emma, y los aliento a preguntar si ella está disponible porque sabe todo sobre Jack el Destripador y es una guía muy divertida. Emma también hacía un tour de Harry Potter, y es segurísimo que le voy a mandar un correo electrónico para mi próximo viaje.
